Councillor Chris Marriott has been a dedicated member of the Armthorpe community for 58 years, and since May 2025 tirelessly working as your Ward Councillor to make it a better place.
Councillor Chris Marriott – Armthorpe Ward Year-End Review 2025/26
What a year it’s been! From knocking on doors during the local elections to now serving you as one of your three Ward Councillors – a huge thank you to everyone who placed their trust in me in May.
Since the election, Cllr Tim Needham, Cllr Nick Pritchard, and I have been working flat-out together (alongside the brilliant Armthorpe Parish Council) to deliver for the people of this great village.
Of course, there have been a few frustrations along the way, but the positives have far outweighed them.
If you haven’t already, pop onto the Armthorpe Parish Council website or Facebook page and take a look at everything that’s been happening – the events this year have been bigger and better than ever, and that’s all thanks to the fantastic community support and spirit we share.
A special thank you to the Parish Council Chair and all the Parish Councillors for everything you do, week in and week out.
I want to reassure everyone that when you contact any of us – your Ward or Parish Councillors – with an issue, we deal with it straight away. Sometimes things take a little time because they involve other agencies (highways, planning, housing, etc.), but rest assured we are constantly chasing them on your behalf.
One of my election promises was to always be open and transparent, and I hope you feel I’ve kept that promise. In that spirit, here’s exactly how I’ve used my £3,000 Ward Budget this year:
£1,200 – Armthorpe Air Cadets (new camping equipment for Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions)
£300 – Cast Theatre (pantomime tickets for families who wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend)
£134 – Armthorpe Swimming Club (towards new life-saving equipment) *split three ways
£750 – Armthorpe Parish Council (new public access defibrillator for the Community Centre)
£350 – Civic Mayor of Doncaster’s Charity Appeal (Doncaster Hygiene Bank)
£166.66 – Markham Main Juniors FC (winter training costs) *split three ways
That leaves £99.34 remaining.
I hope you agree the money has been put to very good use in our community. If you know of any local group, club, or good cause that could benefit from funding next year, please get in touch – the budget is there to be used for Armthorpe!
Finally, may I wish every single resident a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy 2026. I’m looking forward to continuing the work we’ve started this year through 2026 and beyond.
Best wishes,
Cllr Chris Marriott

Just to give everyone who doesn't know me a bit more info.
I am born and bred in Armthorpe and attended Armthorpe Church School, Shaw Wood Academy and Armthorpe Comprehensive. My father worked for decades at DMBC as Chief Payroll officer. After retirement he went all over the UK doing lectures on finance issues. He also produced a book annually with updates to Finance and payroll laws.
After leaving school I went into retail. After many a year I decided to have a complete career change joining First bus Doncaster.
At FirstBus Doncaster I climbed the ladder from Driver, Supervisor to Forward Allocator (Senior Management). For the last 5 years I worked for First Bus at Crucial Crew educating Y6 children from all over South Yorkshire alongside SYP SYFS,SYRS and SY magistrates before retiring at the end of 2024 .
Since then I'm in the process of setting up a small business venture, passed exams and registered with the CAA to fly drones and became a Ward Councillor in May 2025 of which Im extremely proud of achieving. I stood as a Reform candidate till I resigned the whip and became an Independent. Please see next FAQ about why I have now become a member of Advance UK.
I have 3 children 21 31 and 34 and at the end of November 2025 my first Grandchild was born.
I coached, refereed football and was a committee member for DDJSFL.
I'm also a Community First responder for First Aid and Cardiac Arrest backed up with qualifications in CPR,First Aid, AED, PALS and ACLS.
I also hold a Safety Officer qualification and Health and Safety qualification.
In 2019 I was diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease. I hope that with me being elected as a Ward Councillor it gives inspiration to anyone with a disability that if you put your heart mind and soul in to it, anything is acheivable.

Reform UK Betrayed Britain – I'm Joining Advance UK to Take Our Country Back
After the May 2025 elections, Nigel Farage and Reform UK turned their backs on patriotic strongholds like Doncaster. Promised leadership support? Empty words – just disgraceful no-shows.
The result? Chaos on the ground: infighting, weak leadership, and the local group leader resigning his post in despair after his own members turned on him.
Now, a true beacon of hope has risen: Advance UK – proudly launched in December 2025 by Ben Habib, former Deputy Leader of Reform.
Their bold vision fires the soul: a proud, sovereign, and prosperous United Kingdom, fiercely defending our nation, our freedoms, our democracy, and equality under the law for every true Briton.
After studying their platform and speaking personally with Ben Habib, I know in my heart this is the right fight – for my constituents, for Doncaster, and for Britain itself.
I stand tall and join Advance UK alongside Cllr Nicola Brown.
If you're sickened by Reform's broken promises and betrayal of our great nation, rise up and join Advance UK today. Together, we'll reclaim Britain's destiny and build the strong, independent future our people deserve!

As much as I would like Doncaster Sheffield Airport open doing it with tax payers money instead of investment is not the right way.
Reason:
Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) and Concerns for Taxpayers
Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA), formerly known as Robin Hood Airport, closed in November 2022 after its private owner, Peel Group, declared it financially unviable. It had accumulated losses of around £180 million during Peel's operation from 2005 to 2022. Since then, local authorities—led by the City of Doncaster Council and South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA)—have pursued reopening it as a publicly supported project.
The main "threat" to taxpayers stems from the substantial public funding required, amid rising costs, projected initial losses, competition risks, and criticisms of viability.
Key Financial Details and Taxpayer Exposure
Total estimated reopening cost: Up to £193 million (as of late 2025), including infrastructure, licensing, and operations.
Funding breakdown:
£160 million from SYMCA (devolved government funds).
£16.1 million previously allocated by SYMCA.
£17.4 million from City of Doncaster Council.
Additional £57 million borrowing approved by Doncaster councillors in November 2025 to cover early cashflow gaps.
Lease commitments: A 125-year lease with Peel Group involves potential payments totaling £363 million over time.
Projected performance:
Losses expected for the first 9 years (up from earlier estimates of 5 years), totaling around £81 million.
Profitability forecast from 2034 onward, with potential £230 million pre-tax profit by 2049.
A 20% rise in early operating costs could force closure again.

Why It's Seen as a Threat/Risk to Taxpayers
Escalating costs — Started at ~£100-145m estimates; now £193m, with warnings of further increases.
No private investor yet — Efforts to attract private funding failed initially, leading to full public backing via council-owned Fly Doncaster company. Plans exist to seek private partners later (once profitable).
Competition and incentives — Rival airports (e.g., Leeds Bradford, East Midlands) warn that using public money to offer airlines discounts/incentives could distort markets and trigger legal challenges.
Historical failure — Peel deemed it unviable; critics (including Ryanair's CEO) call it a "hard sell" due to proximity to larger hubs like Manchester.
Environmental and political criticism — Greens argue it's unsustainable amid climate goals; some view it as politically driven rather than economically sound.
Safeguards claimed — Leaders (Mayor Ros Jones, Oliver Coppard) emphasize diligence, economic regeneration (jobs, £5bn+ boost), and future private involvement to recoup costs.
As of December 2025, progress continues: Munich Airport International is the operator partner, airspace/licensing work is underway, and talks with airlines (e.g., TUI, Wizz Air) are ongoing. Freight may start in 2027, full passenger ops in 2028.
Supporters see it as a strategic investment in regional growth; critics view it as a high-risk use of public money on a previously failed venture.
We welcome everyone who is on the electoral roll. If you are not on the electoral roll we encourage you to register.
You cannot join if you are a member of another political party.
In becoming a member, you are endorsing our Mission Statement and our policies.
It is important to emphasise, we are NOT policing NOR endorsing members’ views.
Our nation is crumbling.
Our constitution has been undermined.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is severed with a border in the Irish Sea, put there by the Tories. None of the mainstream parties will remove this border and unite our Kingdom.
Our other borders have been dismantled. Mass migration is eroding our culture and destroying our economy.
Free speech is being systematically shut down to silence our complaints.
Our democracy is being defeated by international law and domestic agencies.
Our children are indoctrinated at school.
Justice is prejudiced.
There is not a single mainstream party that stands for nation, freedom, democracy and equality under the law. Advance UK will be that party.
There is no such thing as “right wing”. There are those who believe in governance by supranational institutions, international law and domestic unaccountable agencies. These are also the people that do not care about the nation state, freedom, democracy and equality under the law.
Then there are those of us who believe in our country, freedom, democracy and equality under the law.
This is not a “left/ right” thing and there are no political parties standing for the principles in which we believe.
Moreover, the General Election is years away. There is no vote to split. We need to win the debate and set the direction of travel for the country.
Finally, democracy is about choice, not fortifying into position those who have already failed by not “splitting” their vote.
Reform has no settled political philosophy. It stands for nothing other than the pursuit of power.
Farage is on the record saying:
Reform does not believe in democracy. Farage is Reform and Reform is Farage. Advance UK’s constitution is entirely democratic.
Reform does not believe in free speech. It polices its members views and habitually throws people out of the party for what they have tweeted. Advance UK does not police its members. We must be judged by our policies, not the views of our members.
Some of Reform’s MPs voted for assisted dying. Advance UK stands absolutely against it.
Reform uses lawfare against its own – Rupert Lowe and others. Advance UK would never do such a thing.
